On January 15th, Parlor had its first ever Style Lab!

It was an evening full of fun, fabulous hair styling, food and wine, friendship and laughter.

The Parlor Beauty Experts set up stations for one on one styling tutorials in Braiding, Curl Styling, Flat Iron Styling, Up-Do styling, and Make-Up techniques.

Attendees moved from station to station learning techniques to take home with them

Many colorful conversations were had, friendships formed, and beauty created!

In the end, we were able to raise $645 for the Rotary Flood Relief Fund for the communities effected by Hurricane Irene in Upstate New York.

Aveda's Safe Alternative to Controversial Keratin Hair StraighteningTreatments

Aveda's Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System is a permanent hair retexturizing system that can be customized for your desired results- straight, straight with body, or redefining tight coarse curls into loose larger curls. This system is a minimum of 74% naturally derived and contains organic botanical such as jojoba oils, meadow foam seed oil and coconut derived conditioners that condition and protect the hair during processing.

I asked one of our "Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System" specialists Amanda Amabile, to answer some questions about the hair smoothing system we use here at Parlor to help control frizz and texture issues the Aveda and Parlor way. Here is what Amanda had to say...

How does it work?

The Smooth Infusion system is a ammonium-thioglicolate based product (the same main ingredient in a perm) used with a thermal component; blow dryer, flatiron, or curling iron; to provided desired permanent results.

Will the hair smell like "perm" after the service?

The neutralizing treatment contains organic ylang ylang oil to nourish the senses and eliminate post service order.

How long will the hair be straight?

Your hair will be straight permanently! It will remain straight until your hair grows out and until it is removed through having your haircut. It can be reformed however using this system if you wish it to have a wave pattern replaced.

How often does it need to be touched up when it grows in?

It is recommended that there be 3-4" of regrowth in order to ensure accurate retouching. This will take approximately 6-8 months for your hair to grow this much.

What is the cost of the service?

The base price of the Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System is $375 for a three hour appointment, this is the amount of time needed for the average guests hair thickness and length. If additional time is needed we charge $150 an hour. The amount of time needed for the service can be discussed during the required consultation with the stylist who is performing the service.

How will I take care of my hair at home?

Immediately after the service it is recommended that you not wash or wet your hair for 72 hours. Also it is recommended not to tuck the hair behind the ears or use ponytail holders or clips that can crease or put stress on the hair during this time period. Since the system is permanent there will be very little styling time needed. It is recommended to use Aveda's Smooth Infusion shampoo and conditioner for at home care and maintenance. If you have highlighted or colored hair your stylist may recommend a different Aveda Home Hair Care regime.

We Are Looking For Models for Aveda's NEW Smooth Infusion Retexturizng System as well as Katja's August Updo/ Braiding Classes

Every Monday at Parlor is education day. We typically do instruction in the morning with our apprentices practicing on live models in the afternoon. They learn from the challenges and surprises they encounter as well as unveiling grand makeovers.
BUT.....

On Monday July 11th at 11am we are looking for Two models who would like to be part of our class for salon stylists to refine their skills using the New Aveda Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System. (check out this link for an AVEDA presentation of this new fabulous in salon treatment) As mentioned in previous blog posts this treatment can be used to refine and reform texture or to permanently straighten it.

Also Monday August 1st as well as Monday August 15th Katja will be demonstrating and teaching updo skills including braiding techniques. We are offering this opportunity to our salon guests as there is no risk involved only skills to master that everyone can use!

Color Services and Options

The many options with color can be overwhelming to those who are new to the hair coloring world and as well as to fashionistas. Below is a helpful summary of the many options Parlor offers...

Single Process Color

1) Demi and Semi-Permanent Color
Semipermanent can be used to "blend away" grey hair. It will help subdue the grey strands. The beauty of this choice of color type is the effect on the grey but will gradually wash off. This will conveniently be when the new (gray infused) hair will begin to present the uncolored roots making it a close match up avoiding the "rooted" look.

2) Permanent Haircoloring
This color can over take any grey hairs and make them the color you choose. While this color will fade with exposure to sun and other elements it will permanently cover your natural haircolor.

3) Gloss (or Toner)
This is an allover color that is frequently combined with another color service. Added to highlights when you want to achieve a slightly different hue, a perfect solution for those desiring cool tones, or intense reds. We also have a sheer "Gloss" to add shine, smoothness, or weight to your hair.

4) Double Process Coloring
This technique is used when we are trying to remove darkness of any kind from the hair. This could be used to achieve a "Platinum as in Gwen Stefani" look or if you wish to step down your darkness a shade or two (or three or four).

Highlights

We categorize these by the amount of highlight coverage of the head 

1) 1/2 Head

Highlights will be strategically added to the front area of the head (including the sideburn area) to just over the crown area. This is the most commonly done highlight application as it replicates the sun's natural highlights.

2) 3/4 Head Highlight

In addition to the above described "1/2 Head", highlights will additionally be added to the outer nape area. this helps blend the highlight to the under darkness for those who wear their hair up alot. This is around 6 to 8 foil packets generally and usually increases the service fee by around $20 from a "half head of highlights".

3) Full Head of Highlights

This application of highlights covers your entire head. I find this neccessary when the desired look is to change the overall color. Unlike a natural sunkissed look this will bring you to a new level of lightness. Some find this only neccessary every third highlight or once a year. A "full head of highlights" may also be desired to produce more fullness and texture by coloring a larger percentage of hair. An additional gloss or toner can be nice as well! The service cost of a Full Highlight vs a Half Head of Highlights is usually another 50% in addition to the stylists service fee for a Half Head of Highlights. So if your stylists 1/2 Head Highlight is listed as $120.00 their Full Head Highlight would then be around $180, excluding any additional color add ons such as glossing or toning.

4) Area Highlight

This can be used along with an allover color to add dimension or alone for a signature touch of color. The possibilities are endless with this color technique.

Highlight Add-ons

* Glossing or Toning (adds a hue of color to reduce or enhance tone or simply to add shine)

* Additional color mix-up (priced at $30 for each 20 gram increment)
* Color in between foils (Gray coverage, added depth, etc)
* Extra long or Extra thick hair (Crystal Gale were sorry but it does take longer to foil hair that is halfway down your back)

Color Melting
When just one color won't do, this process melts two or more colors together by overlapping them and blending them together. As my respected colleague and teacher David Adams says... "Blonde's will look fresh off the beach, reds will rival a tequila sunrise, and browns will resemble a mouthwatering toffee & caramel dessert." This technique is a great way to get that "Ombre" look!
Shoe Shine
Short hair doesn't mean short on color options. This process is made just for shorter hair, and it's perfect for those of the male persuasion. Color is applied to foil, and the hair is simply "polish." Kind of like a pair of shoes - just a little more hairy.
Flying Colors
yet another process for short hair that's also popular with the men folk, Flying Colors applies the color freehand with the comb. On the "fly," if you will. A completely creative technique that always results in a unique look.
Circles
Take any notion of crop circles and toss them out the window. This process first divides the hair into two or three circles, and then applies either complimentary or contrasting colors to each layer. The end result is a layered cascading effect that can be as soft or as strong as your appetite dictates.
Color Cleanse
Sometimes its best to erase the hair color history and start with a clean slate. this process removes the artificial color from your hair and leaves it fresh as a spring daisy. And that's really fresh.
Color Correction
Not in love with a previous color job? Not even "like" with it? Have no fear color correction is here. This process usually takes two or more services on the same day, and is the best way to shift your shade or tweak your tone.
Pre-colorization
Thinking of laying down a darker shade? Consider this the all-important primer. This process is the essential first step in going dark.
Lighten and Tone
Everyone knows there's a difference between blonde and BLONDE/blonde. This one's for the latter. You want to be uber blonde, and you want everyone to know it. This process lightens the hair and then tones it for the ultimate bomb-shell-ification. Just be prepared to start having more fun!
Highlights
Want to lighten up, but not completely? In this process, your colorists weaves sections of hair out and wraps them in foil with a lighter color. The end result can be soft and subtle, blending closely with your existing color, or strong and distinct, with head turning, wow inducing contrast.
Lowlights
The "yin" to the highlights "yang". In this process, your colorist also weaves sections of hair out and wraps them in foil (or not) but this time its to the dark side. Low lights can be used to tone down blondes, add depth to a style, and even cover up those natural highlights (again, we never say grey).
Slices
If highlights and lowlights give you the yawns, get a bolder effect with this process. Slices are not shy and will proudly display their color definition. For the thick haired or the curly haired this is a sure fire winner.
Back - To - Back Slices
This process exactly what it says. Takes two or more slices and puts them smack dab next to each other with no hair left untouched as a buffer. Definitely for the more adventurous, this bold dimensional effect demands, and will get, plenty of attention.
Tips
So, maybe root to tip isn't your speed. Then tips might be right up your alley. This process is a more contemporary approach coloring just the ends of the hair. Either "tip" your whole head, or use it sparingly to accentuate the line of your cut. Works like a charm, whether you are straight or curly.

AVEDA's new Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System has arrived!

Most have heard the controversy concerning Brazilian and Japanese treatments using or not using formaldehyde to straighten frizzy texture from hair. Read this article....Formaldehyde Officially On Carcinogen List, Brazilian Blowouts Officially Dangerous.

I want to give a big "Thank You" to AVEDA for developing their own mission aligned version of this treatment. It is and always has been Aveda's goal to be as organic and natural as possible, ingredients are central to their mission. I can now let go of my doubts about the toxicity of at least Aveda's treatment to smooth and retexturize our curly or frizzy haired guests. It has been a concern of mine both for our guests and for the technicians who perform the services. The AVEDA Smooth Infusion Retexturizing Treatment is a permanent retexturizing treatment that can be used to completely smooth out texture or reform texture into manageable consistent wave or curl.

I asked Michelle Combs our "In Salon Educator" and Aveda's very own "Purefessional Trainer" to give us her thoughts on the new treatment...

Lets be honest, I am a skeptic! That skirt I bought at 75% off? I was convinced it was torn somewhere. My husband says he can fix the bathtub drain? I’ll believe it when I see it. Even when my six year old daughter tells me she can make guacamole with no help from me- I am surprised, astonished even- that she was right. (And that guacamole was pretty darn good.) So when Aveda asked some of us Purefessionals if we would be willing to teach their new Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System, I agreed. Just out of curiosity.

Aveda promised coarse hair to become smooth. Tight curls to become long, straight locks. “Transformation, Recreation. Defying Convention. This is the essence of the Aveda Retexturizing System,” they said. I was skeptical. I had used Kerasmooth Treatments. I have seen the effects of Japanese straight perms, and Brazillian blowouts. Did I approve? Eh, they worked. But something was eating at me. You see, as a Certified Color Trainer for Aveda, and, more recently, a Color Purefessional- I knew exactly what was in Aveda’s color line and how and why it worked. It gave me piece of mind. But these texture treatments? They didn’t explain to me what I wanted- needed- to know, and that was : Just what are you putting in this stuff that I am putting on my guests head, as well as touching and breathing- a lot?

But Aveda did.

Aveda mailed me a workbook that listed every ingredient in the system and what it does, before I was even sent off to learn it. That reeled me in. I was more curious. They claimed The Aveda Difference, which I learned quickly, was Customized Texture. They said, “Instead of delivering cookie-cutter texture, each system can be customized by the stylist to create a wide range of different textures and give each guest the exact look that they desire.”

And that’s not all. Aveda had “ Other Key Points of Distinction”-

* “The Aveda Retexturizing System uses products made from the most naturally derived ingredients as possible.”

* “Guests experience a permanent change in texture- not temporary results.”

* “ Our products are formulated to protect the hair during processing.”

* “ The use of organic ylang ylang oil eliminates strong post- service odor.”

I had to see it to believe it. I was convinced there had to be something wrong with it. It just sounded too good to be true. So, I left my family and comfort zone in NYC and spent two days in Pennsylvania immersed in the stuff. Literally. We played with it incessantly. My teacher had an answer for every question, and I had a lot. I really nerded out. I now know that Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickening agent from various plant sources including cotton. I know that the system contains organic jojoba oil, meadow foam seed oil, and coconut-derived conditioners.

I rode the train home carrying a scary doll head with four quadrants of hair. One glossy stick straight, one straight with admirable volume and body, one with beautiful natural ringlets, and, of course, the last quadrant, that had the unspeakable, frizzy hair to start with, just for comparison. I thought, as I stared out that window of the train, clutching my trophy doll head: “I now have an amazing arsenal of permanent solutions for my texture- challenged guests, (which is just about all of them), just in time for summer.”

And my bags smelled like ylang ylang oil. Sold.

The Parlor Beauty Squad has been exploring the retro world of hair. We have had a collection of inspiring workshops in recent months. From collaborating with invited hairstyling experts to sharing techniques and exercising skills during our Monday Education Days. Honing our "hard tool" (that's an industry term for iron and brush work) as well as our liquid tool skill set has given us a large repitoire to draw from. Who could forget the paintings adorning our walls during the summer? Erin Boyle our resident artist and apprentice extraordinaire was our featured artist this summer at Parlor. Erin has recently been promoted as our newest protege and "Hair Painter". Perhaps you have already experienced her blowdrying and/ shampooing techniques or one of her many "Hand Relief Treatments". The story is ...she decided to to leave a clientele in Syracuse and move to New York City to take a bite out of The Big Apple. She has recently completed our intense training program and is available for appointments just in time for the holiday season.

She has an amazing eye for color and placement. She is creative and can think outside or inside the box... you choose! She is a patient listener and highly self critical. She always has a new idea brewing in her head trying to out do her last creation. While I am extremely excited about her coloring capabilities she can also cut a mean head of hair!

Going Gray...or Steel, Pewter, Silver, Platinum, Sterling?

Gray is beautiful, and gray hair is in! There is even a few super heroes to represent the strength of a grey streaked women both are in X-Men, "Storm and Rogue". Gray left to its own device can be blah. Sometimes it just needs a little nudge. A bit of creamy blonde can pull the tone out of a dull gray category and transform it into a color I like to call "Swedish Blonde". A better option for some is a bit of depth replaced with a lowlight to increase contrast with your skin tone. Apart from whether it looks good is the perception that it ages you.

Sherry Maysonave elaborates in her book Casual Power, "Gray hair can be empowering or it can totally disempower an individual. If gray hair suits your coloring and if it has a bright sheen to it, rather than a dull, tired tone, it can work well for you. However, for this to be true, the cut and style of gray hair must reflect an updated look. If the style is freeze-dried somewhere in the past, gray hair contributes even more to a not-living-in-present-time statement. The problem with that, especially in the workplace, is that your hair can send the message that 'you' are tired or that your ideas and work methods are not up to date either. On the other hand, stylish gray hair (in good condition) can convey that you have years of experience and possibly, wisdom, which can contribute to an authoritative air."

Diane Sawyer "Swedish Blonde" using highlights to bridge a gray to a blonde.

Embrace the white and add a silver hue with a cool toned gloss.

Add a bit of steel lowlights to create a pewter tone.

Diane Keaton has a beautiful example of highlights and lowlights. This will add a touch of depth but will be easy to maintain.

A great way to transition out of high maintainance all over color is to leave a bit out in the areas that show first. This is a softer version of what Anne Bancroft sported in "The Graduate".

I love the color that Diane Keaton is wearing in this image. She has highlighted gray hair to a slightly creamy color while dropping a few low lights in to add depth. One variation would be to add more lowlights, another would be to add a third caramel tone for warmth. The important attribute to help with maintenance is the creamy colored highlights near the predominantly gray areas while slipping in the low lights right behind those. For example usually the part and hairline expose the root area first, so the highest of the highlights are placed there. When done in sync with what your natural placement is you can now touch up anywhere from 2 and 1/2 months to 6 months depending on your tolerance and the amount of depth desired.

A Real Woman's Boudoir Photographs by Charise Isis

Our newest show features real women in their most intimate of settings. It is a collection of photographs by award winning, internationally renowned, boudoir and pin-up photographer, Charise Isis. She was recently featured on NBC and NYC Taxi TV for her pin-up photography.

I originally connected with Charise after being moved by her most recent art project "Grace". Her portraits reveal the courage, beauty, and grace of women who have survived breast cancer. The Grace Project was recently accepted for fiscal sponsorship through New York Foundation for the Arts. Charise’s own words describing this work: “In photographing the project I loosely use Hellenistic sculpture as a visual reference for the portraits, taking inspiration from such artifacts as the ‘Venus De Milo’ and ‘Nike of Samothrace’. These dismembered artifacts have survived the trauma of history and are still valued as objects of beauty within our culture.”

Inspired by her work, I contacted her to inquire about partnering up our hair and makeup skills for her projects, specifically her body-image-building “For Them or For You” pinup/boudoir photo events. We decided that the best way to start our collaboration would be to experience one of her events first-hand. The girls of Parlor got together for an evening of pinup primping of our own and had a blast. A little bit of wine helped to loosen us up as we prepared each other for our own boudoir coming out. Inspired by the collection of props that Charise provided, we rummaged through suitcases exploding with props, clothes, and jewelry to find our inner pinup girl. Each of us feeling a different degree of openness, we ended up with a variety of looks. Here are a couple of the images of myself that were created that night. We are planning a November date to be offered to our Parlor guests to experience this fun self-esteem building event. .Please email us if you wish to be notified when the exact date is determined.

It was a hot balmy day with a thunderstorm coming around the mountain. The type of day your grateful to have your hairdresser by your side. Especially true on your wedding day with the ceremony amongst the trees alongside a peaceful brook. Katja (Sarah's Bridal Specialist of choice) was feeling no pressure even amongst Sarah's family of hairdressers, she has a cool head when it comes to any upstyling. With a comb, brush, hot curling tongs, volumizing tonic and some pincurl clips Katja molded the exact hair style Sarah had her heart set on. Glamour waved bangs secured into a side swept cascade of curls (hairstyle of the moment). Sarah looked as fresh and beautiful as ever as she walked down her grassy isle to marry her sweetheart along a mountainside creek at The Full Moon Resort. We wish you a long and happy life together!!!

I LOVE doing bridal updo's! I find upstyling one of the most creative things a hairdresser does. I relish the feeling of the switch in my brain from left-mode to right-mode as I start whipping the curled tendrils into a "hair-do".

The first step in most of my bridal upstyles is a soft roller set. Once the hair has some movement I back brush the hair to give it structure and form. This stage creates a cushion for the hairpins to lock into.

Next comes the pleasurable switch in the brain from left to right and the hair dance begins. This particular hair style on my dearest friend Carrie was particularly fun for two reasons. One, she has great taste and would enjoy a dramatic style. Two, she has the best hair in the world!!!

Since her hair is abundant the challenge becomes not only getting it up but ensuring it will stay up. I used a pony tail technique featured in Ginger Boyle's "Upstyle" DVD to secure her length in three places. I then looped and secured the hair length with bobby pins in a balanced but scattered fashion. With everything secure and in its final place I nestled in the tiera. Another option would be little flower pins perhaps. It was so secure, she later admitted to sleeping in it the night of the wedding too exhausted from the festivities to take it down. Hmm I hope she didn't look too "scary Carrie" in the morning.

It is warming up! We finally get to soak in the sun and the pool! Like most good things though there is catch. Pool water and sun are both harsh on hair strength, and color. You can soften the blow though (pun intended). Before swimming in the pool drench your hair in tap water first. This allows your hair to soak up the non chlorinated water pre-dip. Post dip be sure to Shampoo out the chlorine. Additionally if you are at risk for fadeage (red heads I am lookin at you) apply a leave in treatment on a daily basis like Aveda's Daily Hair Repair.

For blondes gone "brassy" Aveda makes "Blue Malva Color Conditioner". Used once a week it makes both all over and highlighted blondes look first day fresh. I recently had a "platinum" guest tell me that "Blue Malva" day is his favorite day of the week!

Brunettes and redheads wanting to ward off fadage, keep your color rich and true by using the Aveda Sun Veil to block out the UV rays for up to 16 hours (it is water resistant too). These small steps can make a huge difference in protecting your hair color through the summer months! A few minutes a day to preserve your color can save you a premature touch up appointment. According to my calculations that is about 2 more hours of beach time, see ya there!

Lipstick Tip, Make It Stay ALL Day by Giovanna

Begin by prepping your lips with concealer to create a base and to cancel some of your skins natural pigmentation, then set with a light dusting of translucent powder. I prefer Aveda's Inner Light Concealer, and Aveda Inner Light Loose Powder as a combination.

Line and lightly fill in lips with liner using Aveda's Nourish-Mint Liner.

Apply a cream lip color out of the tube or use a lip brush for a more precise application. A great combination... Aveda Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color or Sheer Mineral Lip Color, Aveda Flax Stick #11 Lip Brush or Retractable Lip Brush if your "on the go".

Using your finger, tap a lighter colored frosted powder (eye shadow works great!!!) onto the center of your lips to create a full pouty, matte, shimmery look. Aveda Petal Essence Single Eye Color is my shadow of choice.

This technique will lock in your lip color for a look that will last all day! Did someone say "Wedding" ???

Katja Marsman is a popular stylist at Parlor . She's always giving great styling advice to her guests (and coworkers!). Here she shares her insight on an Aveda favorite-- Style Prep Smoother.

With Spring/Summer approaching (finally!), I have some tips on how to keep your hair tame through the heat and humidity. If you haven't yet discovered the Style Prep Smoother from Aveda's Smooth Infusion line, then you've yet to witness what I consider a miracle! This light cream will defend against the humidity. You start by applying the Style Prep Smoother (about the size of a dime for most hair types) from roots to ends on damp hair. You would then apply the Aveda product of choice next to supply hold to the hair if desired. Style Prep is a fantastic product, that many of my guests/clients can attest to. Because Style Prep Smoother does not offer hold and is very light it can be used easily on all hair types and textures to fight against the effects of humidity (think frizz or static electricity); from fine and straight to coarse and curly.

We are welcoming Spring with a display of landscapes by our very own web illustrator Donna Mehalko. She is an acclaimed fine artist and painter. She first moved to New York to work on contract with Lord and Taylor in 1987. Her first assignment in New York was a full page ad in the New York Times. She has worked for many fashion and beauty clients including Henri Bendel, Revlon, and L'Oreal. She has also illustrated books by William Morrow, Viking-Penguin, and covers for Farrar Strauss Giroux.

In these paintings Donna uses a technique called gouache which is heavier and more opaque than water color but in a similiar vein. Please feel free to stop by Parlor and see them first hand. We have received a wonderful response to our new website and are very excited about introducing some of her other work to all of you.

Gwenn and Molly Ringwald do the morning news show circuit after the Oscars

We did a long string of radio and TV shows in our three days together, so many I couldn't even name them all. I hadn't seen Molly in almost a year, and it was nice to catch up with her. She spends most of her time on the West Coast now filming her series on ABC Family "The Secret Life of an American Teenager". She has also been recording an album, writing a book, birthing twins... not necessarily in that order. She looks fantastic, amazing actually! I can't believe she is a mother of three now. She looks great and works like crazy and once again she is my idol: she was my fantasy muse and inspired my fascination with creating the perfect red heads, (didn't you know I was the red head expert of the Minneapolis punk scene in the 80's) and now through her book as she embraces being a 40 year old mother, and woman growing out of the image of her as perennial teenage girl.

It was a treat to hear a few songs from her upcoming album... It honestly gave me shivers, her dramatic singing voice is deeper than one would think! Did you know she started out as a singer? Her Father and her performed together when she was a child. Then John Hughes found her and well you know the rest. I have had the previous pleasure of catching her performances in "Tick, Tick, Boom", as well as "Cabaret" and her upcoming endeavour has even more soul.

I will be working with Molly for a few days again starting on April 27TH as her new book is released by Harper and Collins entitled: "Getting The Pretty Back: Friendship, Family, and Finding The Perfect Lipstick". It's a witty and cute look at life as a woman who enjoys above all motherhood, but also turning 40 and how her perspective changed overtime with her added wisdom. With chapters on hair and her theory on stylists (of course I had to scan that chapter if no other). She doesn't mention me by name but rather I would like to think in spirit. She states that if you find a good hairdresser that really gets you, stick with her. We have been together for over 10 years sometimes near and sometimes far, so I think I passed the muster. She also writes about lipstick colors, and other funny fashion anecdotes. A favorite segment of mine is the "Fashion Faux Pas That Work", such as roots, chipped nail polish, etc... written by her favorite fashion designer Todd Thomas. It's not the curly haired adolescent red head giving advice in the high school bathroom ("Breakfast Club"), but rather vivacious auburn haired woman with a glass of wine and friends at Balthazar. Not a ghost writer in sight either! Gwenn and Michelle spent the morning sharing some great haircutting and coloring techniques with the Gamma students at the Aveda Institute New York. Gwenn began the morning with an Aveda wellness activity: Students paired off and tried their hands at drawing a picture that was only verbally described by his or her partner. This activity showed the importance of a detailed consultation!

Michelle demonstrated a creative color application and Gwenn showed off her short hair cutting skills.

The paintings of Jane A Hugentober

I first saw Jane Hugentober's paintings while having my breakfast burrito warmed at Ciao For Now (http://www.ciaofornow.net/), a great place to grab a peaceful breakfast and some quiet time to start the day.

The dramatic tones and hues drew me in. I had just finished renovating our salon ( P A R L O R www.parlorhairsalon.com) on the other side of Tomkins Square Park and was craving some rich deep art to warm up our newly crisp white walls. I decided to give Jane a call and see if maybe by chance she might be looking for a place to hang her next show. We met and made it happen.

I am now the proud owner of "Kristine II" (in the bottom left corner above) and a few of her other paintings have found their homes as well. Our guests really enjoyed her work, it was an honor to be able to introduce her pieces to everyone. At the end of March we will be changing the installation but are in talks with Jane about showing some of her other work in the near future. The title of this post was the subject in an email Gwenn received today after a truly fun salon visit! Marjorie Ingall, a long time guest at PARLOR, co-writer for Crystal Renn's recent hit book HUNGRY, contributing writer at SELF, and a columnist at Tablet Mag, decided to challenge Gwenn with an interesting appointment. Marjorie booked an haircut for her mother, Carol, and left the rest up to our fearless Beauty Squad leader!

Carol mentioned that she wanted her cut to resemble Judi Dench's and after a thorough consultation, Gwenn's shears got busy! Carol may have entered PARLOR a little bit skeptical, but left a very happy new client.

As Marjorie went on to rave her in email,

"She looks so great! And I know she had a great time. She thought you were awesome. I'm so so pleased!!!!!!!!! You know how FRAUGHT mother-daughter stuff can be, and that was totally easy and fun for us both. You rule."

Marjorie also attached this picture of her mother and Gwenn... don't they both look so happy?!

It was so much fun to get the mail today and receive the newest edition of Salon Today magazine! PARLOR was recognized for "Best Practice Recruitment and Training 2010" for the magazine's annual contest.

As always, PARLOR is working to educate the best up and coming stylists to continue to serve our amazing guests. Congrats to our education team and the whole staff for maintaining such high standards in the world of training!

Gwenn was quoted in the magazine saying,

"Our education days include a demo performed by one of our instructors on a varying subject, then we have models at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m., allowing two hours per service. After each class, the teacher sends out an e-mail to all in the program evaluating and describing the successes and challenges of the day."

Grey Hair Techniques

Most of my career has been dedicated to creating low maintenance haircuts and color for my primarily female and over 30 clientele. I am usually the one who brings up the idea of embracing at least some of the grey hair that is growing in. Some say I am crazy to be telling my clients that I can show them way to not have to come see me so often?

As we age it becomes more unattractive next to the skin to have a solid dark color. Add to that a color outgrowth line after a mere two weeks, not so attractive either. What woman wants to focus that much time and money on their hair to only look good half the time? So as a woman gets a more substantial amount of grey or streaks of grey it usually coincides with the need to trust Mother Nature and let the lightness come through. You will need the insight (and support) of a stylists who is on the same page. If a stylist doesn't think it is a good idea, have consultations with other stylists. They are usually complimentary and a good way to feel out a new hairdresser and see if they are inspired by your hair needs. There is usually a transitional period so it helps to trust the vision of your hair colorists and it helps to have the support of a good girl friend as well!

The most popular techniques I use are:

The Anne Bancroft, “The Graduate" streaks. The epitome of over 40 sexy hair I think. Allowing the grey to just "be" in the most root showing prominent places (parting, sides, and bang area), and added rich depth around and under those areas. The maintenance changes from an every two to three week appointment to a three to four month appointment.
The next one I call "Swedish Highlights" think Bridgette Bardot. A few subtle highlights kick the grey into the blonde category and then the grow out is amazing. Now those grey do you service by blending with the blonde and delaying the look of roots. The blonde and grey meld together, for a maintenance of anywhere from 3 months to 6 months. This past summer I had been doing my color this way with a few added lowlights of a deep brunette to give it an under depth and the appearance of roots (the rebel in me).
I think when it is sparse and just here and there it is not striking enough to just let it go. It creates a faded appearance. I recommend a demi-permanent color to make the grey appear as a highlight. The maintenance of this kind of color is approximately every 3 or 4 months depending on the type of haircut that is worn with it.
The fourth and the most natural is to use a color conditioner to keep the yellow out of the grey. We recommend the Aveda Blue Malva Color Conditioner. You control the usage at home in your own bathroom. Leave it on as a treatment for more depth or weekly to maintain a subtle striking platinum effect.

I love it when clients come back and say I can’t believe how long it has been since I have needed to come in. It is my mission to help women look great with lower maintenance (especially in this economy) so we can be free to enjoy all the wonderful opportunities in life!!

SHAMPOO…Down grade from a premium salon shampoo to a standard salon shampoo, notice I said “salon“ shampoo. You want to lighten up your budget not add build -up and cheap waxy ingredients to your hair, which is what drug store brands will bring to you. Most salon shampoos are better all around than the more commercial brands made for the mass market. Salon lines usually have a range from specialty shampoo/conditioner to a general all purpose cleaning and moisturizing set. However if you have special needs this may not be the place to save money. Instead of adding water just when you are down to the bottom add some from the beginning

HAIRCOLOR… if you are covering a sprinkling of grays use a demi permanent color solution. When permanent color needs a touch up you have a strong contrast between the hair that has been colored and the hair that needs to be touched up. With a demi-permanent choice the hair that has been colored is gradually fading off the grey over time leaving behind the look of a highlight. With this highlight next to the new grey you do not see a desperate root boldly peeking out from the scalp rather a blending of the strand.
For those covering a higher concentration of grey… A strategically placed lowlight is the way to go. Remember Anne Bancroft in The Graduate? Grey but very sexy!!! Embracing grey at a certain age looks so much more confident than covering gray all over.

HAIRCUTS… We encourage slipping in a bang trim between haircuts to keep your haircut looking fresh while getting the most wear for your buck. At $10 to $15 you can stretch the next needed trim by 50%. So instead of getting cut every 6 weeks you could go 9 weeks between full trims and enjoy every minute of it. A full hair cut 4 to 5 times a year instead of 8 (based on a usual routine of six weeks per cut) depending on what fee your hairdresser commands this concept could save around $250 a year. The longest lasting haircut with lots of style has to be a very short, hugging the neck graduated bob. This haircut can grow almost down to the shoulders if funds get tight while carrying a look of purposeful style. It is a myth that short haircuts need to be cut more often, a short haircut that is cut with proper proportion can grow and grow. It’s the incredibly free feeling of daily low maintenance that brings my clients back yearning for a tightening of the shape. I have myself have been wearing this cut and I have been so busy that I haven’t been able to get it cut for four months but I still look the part of a professional hairdresser in the know!
